What are the roles of switches and routers

2023-06-04
A switch (multi port bridge) is a network device used for forwarding electrical/optical signals, which can provide exclusive electrical signal channels for any two network nodes accessing the switch.

Switches can be divided into WAN switches and LAN switches according to different working positions. WAN switches are devices that complete information exchange functions in communication systems and are generally used in the data link layer. Each port of the switch has bridging function, which can connect to a local area network or a high-performance server or work.

A router (i.e. gateway device) is an interconnecting device that connects various local area networks, wide area networks, and metropolitan area networks in the Internet. It is generally applied at the network layer and automatically selects and sets a route based on the signal situation, sending signals in the best path and sequence. Network Switches
A dedicated intelligent network device that connects two or more networks and acts as a gateway between them, reading the address in each packet and determining how to transmit it. Ac Controller

The difference between switches and routers

1. Different functions
The function of a router is to connect multiple computers through a single network cable to achieve virtual dial-up internet access, with automatic recognition of data packet sending and allocation of addresses, as well as firewall function. Multiple computers share a broadband account, which affects each other when accessing the internet; 5G Industrial Router

The function of a switch is to connect multiple computers through a single network cable to achieve simultaneous internet access. It does not have the function of a router, but each computer has its own broadband account, and internet access does not affect each other.

2. Different uses
When it is used to access fiber at home, the switch and router work in the LAN, but the switch works in the data link layer, and the router works in the network layer.

3. Different roles
The analog signals transmitted by the network cable are converted into digital signals through optical cats, and then forwarded by the router to the PC end. When the number of PC ends exceeds the number of routers connected online, a switch needs to be added to expand the interface.
