The difference between 2.4G and 5G in routers

2023-07-26

After making relevant settings and wireless network connections in the background of the Wireless Router, I used my phone to connect to the wireless network, but found two WiFi signal networks because this is a dual frequency router! A WiFi signal is a traditional 2.4G signal, and another name will be followed by a 5G identifier. What do these two signals mean respectively? 4G CAT6 CPE

What does WiFi 5G network mean?

Traditional wireless routers only have a WiFi signal in the 2.4G frequency band, while dual frequency routers not only have a WiFi signal in the 2.4G frequency band, but also a WiFi signal in the 5G frequency band. Due to the vast majority of wireless routers operating in the 2.4G frequency band, there is significant interference between signals, especially in areas with a large number of wireless WiFi devices, which can easily affect network speed. 4G Cat4 Cpe
Advantages and disadvantages analysis of 2.4G and 5G WiFi:

Advantages of 2.4G WiFi: The 2.4G signal has a low frequency and has less attenuation when propagating in air or obstacles, resulting in a longer propagation distance;

Disadvantages of 2.4G WiFi: Currently, most devices use the 2.4G frequency band, which can cause significant interference in areas with a large number of users.

Advantages of 5G WiFi: The 5G signal has a wider bandwidth, a cleaner wireless environment, less interference, stable network speed, and can support higher wireless rates.

Disadvantages of 5G WiFi: The frequency of 5G signals is relatively high, and the attenuation is large when propagating in air or obstacles. The coverage distance is generally smaller than that of 2.4G signals. 4G MIFI
5G WiFi requires device support (mobile phone, laptop, tablet)

5G WiFi can only be supported on dual frequency routers! In addition to wireless router support, 5G WiFi also requires support from devices connected to the network. This means that older phones, laptops, and tablets do not support 5G WiFi networks, and even if you are a dual frequency router, you can only search for 2.4G WiFi networks. However, in recent years, new smartphones, laptops, and tablets have all supported dual band WiFi, and can simultaneously search for 2.4G and 5G WiFi.

So for our users, which is better for 2.4G or 5G WiFi connection?

WiFi signals are transmitted through radio waves, with 2.4G and 5G being two different frequency bands, within which WiFi signals are transmitted. The 5G frequency band has a higher frequency, carries more data, and currently has fewer applications with lower interference, so the effect is better, but the transmission distance is shorter.

If you have a large range of movement, it is recommended to connect to a regular 2.4G WiFi, mainly because 5G WiFi signal coverage does not have an advantage compared to 2.4G. If you are near a dual frequency router, it is undoubtedly recommended to use 5G WiFi, which is more stable in signal and faster in network speed. Generally speaking, 5G WiFi is preferred.
